20 Ways to Race Into Spring This Week (4/30 - 5/6)

The promise of spring brings warmer weather, greener scenery, and two major events this week: the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo! See what the Valley has to offer in the way of events to unlock your creativity, give you the excuse for donning a fabulous hat, and taste test some mint juleps in the meantime.

19 Ways to Get Creative in the Lehigh Valley This Week (3/5 - 3/11)

BY Siobhan DeRemer

It's time to get crafty in the Lehigh Valley this week. When the weather starts to get warmer (you know, minus that bomb cyclone we just had), I'm always itching to get up from my chair and start a project or find a new hands-on skill that gets my brain going. Check out some local vendors that have the same thoughts and enjoy some craft-free events this week, too.

Philadelphia Flower Show (8am-9pm; dates vary | $19–40)
If you're up for a day trip sometime this week, one of the biggest flower shows in the East is currently at the Philadelphia Convention Center. The theme this year "Wonders of Water" pairs horticulture and water and showcases whole floral ecosystems in our local convention center only about an hour from the Lehigh Valley. Grab tickets here and grab more info from the Flower Show site for exhibits, times, and shows.

Pints & Purls at Bethlehem Brew Works (6:30pm-9:30pm | Free)
If you love to cross stitch (me!!), crochet, or knit, this weekly event brings together local crafters with their WIPs in hand. The Steelgaarden has beer specials and BOGO apps just for the occasion. If you need an excuse to get out of the house and craft with a fun group (or you need tips and opinions from fellow crafty people), come check out this group every Monday.

Teen Tech Week: Game Design (5pm - 6pm | Free)
The Parkland Community Library has teamed up with the Da Vinci Science Center to offer teens an awesome way to learn about the technology behind their favorite computer and console games. In this 1-hour session, kids ages 13-18 can explore game design theory and gain computer programming skills used by software developers and even create a game of their own. Not going to lie...we might pretend we're still 18 just to attend this cool class. RSVP here.

Domaci Pop-Up Happy Hour (6pm - 8pm | Free)
One of our favorite home decor stores in the area, Domaci, has moved to the SouthSide and it's time to officially welcome them to the area! Stop by Social Still and grab some complimentary cocktails, food, and get a chance to shop their amazing collection of interior design goodness.

Tuesday Night Trivia at Hardball Cider (6pm - 9pm | Free)
If you're still buzzed and not tapped out after happy hour and gaming, check out one of our favorite trivia spots in the Valley at Hardball Cider (we've been winners in the past, nbd). Enjoy the best local cider (and cocktails and beer, too, for those who aren't cider fans) and test your brain. Signups start at 6:30.

Beer & Bash at Sole (6pm - 10pm)
Grab a beer and play what seems like a mix of Zelda and Smash Bros. in Kingdom Bash. Grab some friends for good beer and meet some new ones by kicking some 8-bit butt.

Books & Beers at Yergey Brewing (6pm - 8pm | $5)
If video games aren't your thing, pair some delicious brew with good reads. Chat with local bibliophiles and enter to win book-themed prizes that benefit the Emmaus Public Library (where you can grab your tickets). While you're there, enjoy a beer from Yergey or a crafted cocktail made from the spirits from Triple Sun.

Water Politics in the Lehigh Valley (7pm - 8:30pm | Free)
Do you have a penchant for clean water in your area and want to make your voice heard? Come share your thoughts with local policy makers and conservators so they can bring the stories to Washington and advocate for cleaner water across the region.

Free Barre3 Community Class at Sorrelli (6:30pm - 8pm | Free)
There may not be a more perfect combo than fitness from some of the strongest instructors in town, gorgeous jewelry, and snacks from Greenmouth. Bring your own mat and RSVP today!

Wine'd Down Workshop: Felted Flowering Cactus (6:30pm - 9pm | $60; $54 for AQ members)
Make a super cute cactus in this class using wool felting techniques from Banana Factory artist Mallory Zondag. Vouchers for beer or wine keep the creative juices flowing and our favorite part—you can't kill this little green guy!

2018 Lehigh Valley Flower Show (click link for times & prices)
Haven't had enough floral grandeur to help ring in spring? Check out the local answer to the Philly Flower Show at Ag Hall in Allentown. Kid-friendly showcases, exhibits, and booths from local farmers and artisans.

Art Night at Hop Hill Brewing (7pm - 9pm | $20)
Judging from the nature of this events roundup, I think you can tell I love a craft/cocktail pairing. Hop Hill is giving you all you need (including a beer) to make your own bar crest. Get out that need for working with your hands and relaxing from the week all in one!

Young at Art (10am - 2pm | Free)
Hosted by the Lehigh Valley Arts Council, check out this day of creative learning and play for all ages. Enjoy performances, arts projects, face painting, games, and prizes. Find out what camps are available this summer and get your kids involved in the arts!

Hands-On Gardening Class: Pruning (9am - 12pm | Free)
The time is approaching fast for outdoor gardening again and what better way to start than to learn how to keep your greenery in good shape. Test out your pruning skills, get your tools sharpened, and get your green space looking amazing when spring (finally!) arrives.

Discover Workshop: Bookbinding (9am - 3pm | $110; $99 for AQ members)
Do you love to read but you'd love to know more about the handwork that goes into creating the pages you turn? In this 1-day class, you'll learn to sew a book, glue the spine, attach a leather spine, and lay down a bookbinding boss.

Mindful Eating at Easton Public Market (12pm - 2pm | $20)
Making meals satisfying is a huge feat in cooking and with nutritionist help, you can use the right tools to make delicious and satiating food in your own kitchen (not to mention you'll make a salad, hummus, and nut tart to enjoy). Register here.

Great Allentown Brew Works Cask Beer Festival (3pm - 7pm | $15-50)
If you're craving a bit more libation and a little less hands-on action (but still some good local crafting!) for your evening plans, check out the Allentown Cask Beer Festival at the Allentown Brew Works with casked beers from over a dozen local craft breweries.

Nourish: A Sacred Circle for Women (2pm - 4pm | $20)
Start your journey of love and self-care with discussions and topics designed for women. Come share your thoughts and stories and join the group for a culminating retreat in May.

The Impossibly Real Art of Peter Maier at the National Museum of Industrial History
It's the last day to experience this incredible exhibit of industrial paint techniques of automobile designer Peter Maier. His seemingly 3D designs will trick your mind and bring out your appreciation for nontraditional artistry. Check here for times and ticket prices.
